Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Guide

Subject exemptions, known as RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)
are only granted when applicants meet faculty policy.

Please note that there are no exceptions to the following;

  • RPL is not granted for work experience.  However, Solicitors who have received Specialist Accreditation from the Law Society of NSW in 2001 or after, are able to claim a 8 credit point exemption in the Master of Laws (C04143) program.
  • RPL is not granted for Practical Legal Training subjects studied more than three (3) years ago.
  • No Postgraduate student shall receive exemption for more than one-quarter of a course of three years or less full time duration on the basis of subjects undertaken towards completed postgraduate studies.
  • If you are seeking RPL for subjects within the Graduate Certificate in Trade Marks Law & Practice or the Master of Industrial Property, you will also need to seek exemption from the Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys (PSB) for the purpose of registration as a Patent Attorney or a Trade Marks Attorney.

If you are seeking RPL for law subjects on the Precedent List, you will need to submit:

  • A detailed subject outline i.e. indicating the contact hours per week, coverage of the subject, topics discussed per week, assessment structure, reference and reading materials. The subject outline should be current at the time of the subject being studied.

  • A completed UTS RPL application form.
  • A certified copy of your testamur or academic transcript indicating the qualification awarded. Please specify the amount of credit points (up to a maximum of 48cp) of RPL that you are seeking.
