Practical Experience (PE) Guidelines
The practical experience work placement is a essential requirement of the UTS:LAW Practical Legal Training Program (PLT).
Students must enrol in the subject 75411 Practical Experience. On successful completion of the Practical Experience (PE) placement a pass grade will be applied against this subject.
The UTS:LAW Practical Experience Rules (PDF) relating to 75411 Practical Experience* are accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) of NSW. The UTS:LAW Practical Experience Rules include important information regarding length of practical experience, work to be experienced, suitable supervisor's and organisations, pre-PLT practical placement approval and practical experience completion deadlines.
* Practical Experience Rules may differ from institution to institution.
The steps you will need to follow are:
1. Application for Practical Experience Approval
- Read PE Rules
- Download and complete Form 1 - Application for Approval of Practical Experience Approval (PDF) for any retrospective and or intended practical experience approval.
- Ensure any intended PE Supervisor receives an Introduction for Supervisors (PDF) letter.
- You cannot seek approval prior to enrolling in your PLT course.
- You should seek approval prior to commencing your PE.
- Ensure that you and your PE supervisor have signed where required.
- Submit a Student Indemnity Form (UTS Insurance) if required by your Supervisor

2. Await Approval from the Practical Experience
Committee
- Applications for PE approval are assessed by the Faculty of Law, Practical Experience Committee (PEC) which meet on the following dates.
- Wednesday 19 December 2007
- Wednesday 09 January 2008
- Wednesday 27 February 2008
- Wednesday 09 April 2008
- Wednesday 28 May 2008
- Wednesday 08 July 2008
- Wednesday 03 September 2008
- Wednesday 29 October 2008
- Applications for practical experience approval Form 1 (PDF) must be received by the PE Office NO LATER than the Friday prior to each PEC meeting.

- Applicants will receive an emailed response regarding the outcome of their application within 2 working days of the PEC meeting.

3. Inform the Practical Experience Committee
of your Practical Experience Completion
- When you complete an approved practical experience placement you must inform the Practical Experience Officer by submitting Form 2 - Supervisors Report/Notification of Completion of a Placement of Practical Experience (PDF)
- PE supervisor reports should be forwarded as soon as possible after the completion of a practical experience placement by mail to:

4. Admission to the Legal Profession
Admission Board of NSW (LPAB)
- Once you have completed all the subjects in the PLT program you are eligible to apply for Admission with the NSW LPAB.
- To be Admitted to the LPAB please refer to the LPAB (website) for Admission dates and application requirements.
- You will need to request a Statement of Academic Record to support your LPAB application.
- You will need to request a Statement of PLT Completion (and Certificate of MLLP Completion where applicable) from the UTS:LAW Practical Experience Officer
5. Graduation
