LAW FOR EDUCATORS
Legal Issues in Non-Compulsory Education

Course:
This two day course is designed to provide an introduction to the legal issues which confront university administrators, managers and academics in Australia.
Its focus is on the impact of the law on the provision of higher education particularly in relation to the responsibilities, duties and rights which exist within the relationship between universities, their students and their staff.
Program:
- The legal framework for the provision of education: governance and management of universities;
- Relationships within the university sector: university, staff, students;
- The rights and responsibilities in education: safety, quality, equality;
Presenters:
Dr Sally Varnham LLB, LLM (Hons) (VUW NZ), AdvCertTertTchg (WP NZ), PhD (UNSW)
Sally Varnham is a Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Law at University of Technology, Sydney. Her primary research interest is the law and education and she has completed Masters and PhD theses in this area. She is the co-author with Professor Jim Jackson of "Law for Educators: School and University Law in Australia" published in 2007 by LexisNexis Australia. She is the author and co-author of a wide number of publications concerning legal issues in both compulsory and higher education and she regularly presents at education law conferences in Australia, New Zealand, the US, the UK and Europe.
Professor Jim Jackson B Comm, LLB (UNSW), LLM Hons, PhD ( Sydney), Grad Dip in Education (Tertiary) (DDIAE).
Jim Jackson has over 30 years teaching experience in business and law schools. He was the foundation Dean of the Faculty of Law and Criminal Justice at Southern Cross University and is now Chair of Academic Board and a member of Council of that University. He has published extensively on school and university law including papers on employment and discrimination issues relating to teachers, academics and students. Together with Sally Varnham he has recently published "Law for Educators: School and University Law in Australia".
