Accounting and Business Information for Lawyers

Introduction

This presentation will introduce accounting terminology and cover accounting processes required to understand the information content of financial statements prepared using accounting rules (standards). At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to read and extract information from financial statements which comprise the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement and develop business intelligence about a firm's operations, investments and their financing.

The presentation is interactive and will comprise discussion of key points, practical business based case studies to reinforce key points and will incorporate real-life examples of the information content from Annual Financial Reports of ASX listed companies for which a detailed financial analysis will be performed and compared to a competitor.

Presentation Objectives

At the conclusion of this one day presentation, participants should have gained knowledge that enhances their business skills in the areas of:

  • Accounting Terminology, including assets, liabilities, shareholders equity, revenues and expenses 
  • Accrual accounting - what it is and how it works 
  • Accounting processes used to analyse and record business transactions 
  • Reading and interpreting the information content of the major financial statements, including the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement 
  • Perform financial analysis to disclose information about the key areas of business activity comprising: 
    • Operating activities 
    • Investing activities 
    • Financing activities

Presenter:

Mr Gregory Pazmandy [BBus (NSWIT), MBus (UTS), FCPA]

Greg Pazmandy is a Fellow of CPA Australia and is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at UTS. He has developed and presented accounting and finance programs for executive development programs, legal practices and CPA Australia, both in Australia and internationally for over 25 years. He has extensive business consulting experience and has developed in-house training programs for many large public companies as well as specialist accounting and finance programs for the continuing education programs of CPA Australia. In addition to lecturing at UTS, Greg has also developed and presented accounting and finance courses for the Australian Graduate School of Management Sydney, Graduate School of Management in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong (Hong Kong Management Association) and China.
