The Direct Entry English Program (DEEP) is recognised as an official English entry qualification by UTS. The course prepares you to enter directly to UTS. Successful completion of DEEP will allow you direct acceptance into UTS without having to sit external tests such as IELTS, providing you meet the other requirements for entry into the course of your choice.
Students who have not previously studied in English may find that they initially experience difficulty following lectures, understanding Australian English and writing in academic English. The ELSSA (English Language and Study Skills Assistance) Centre offers academic workshops and courses at all language levels for undergraduate and postgraduate students. All ELSSA Centre services are free. Make sure you check the ELSSA website for academic writing and speaking courses that best suit your needs. Please also see the website which explains what plagiarism is, as it may seriously affect your academic outcome.

Living in Sydney
Sydney's lifestyle is defined by cultural diversity. People from over 180 countries speaking 140 languages are welcomed in a population of over four and a half million. This means that Sydneysiders enjoy an outstanding range of ethnic food, clubs and festivals, cinema and theatres, Aboriginal arts and culture, museums and music venues. Sydney is also a shopping paradise.
Not only is Sydney one of the most vibrant, youthful and beautiful cities in the world, it is blessed with a magnificent climate. Sydneysiders revel in the long warm summers and enjoy the cooling sea breezes. The hottest months are January and February and the coldest are June and July. View details on Sydneys climate here.
Entertainment and Sights - Sydney is surrounded by theatres and large cinema complexes offering the best plays, musicals and films, all within a short walk of UTS. The following websites will also help you to find many exciting things to do in Sydney:
Sydney City Maps
See Sydney Tourist Guide for lots of exciting things to do & how to get around.
See City of Sydney for interactive maps.
Transport in Sydney
Sydney Buses offer an excellent service to UTS.
Train, Light Rail and Monorail transport systems all provide an excellent service to UTS Campus and the Central Business District (CBD).
Sydney Airport is located about 20 minutes from UTS and is easily accessable by train - or by a shuttle bus service.
Sydney Ferries are a lovely way to see Sydney Harbour and offer direct services to harbour locations.
Working in Sydney
Sydney is Australia's largest city and is also a major business hub. More regional headquarters of multi-national companies from the Asia-Pacific region are set up in Sydney than in any other city in Australia.
As an international student you are legally allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week during semesters and unlimited hours during your holidays. Most students will find some form of part-time work during their stay with us.
Eating and Shopping
UTS:LAW is located near to Sydney's Chinatown. This area has some of the cities best and cheapest restaurants. It is renowned for its wealth of high quality Asian eateries and retail outlets. Paddy's Market in the centre of Chinatown (and opposite the Law School) offers a huge range of low-priced goods such as clothing, souvenirs and leather goods as well as fruit and vegetables and is packed with locals and visitors especially on the weekends.
Chinatown is situated right next door to Sydney's CBD, which also offers a huge range of eating and entertainment options. Close by are the shopping and eating strips of Darling Harbour, Glebe and Newtown.
UTS Union is also a great place to eat on campus and to meet and hang out with friends. There's an international food hall and lots of tables where you can sit around and soak up the busy lunchtime atmosphere.
Buying a Motor Vehicle
If you purchase a motor vehicle while you are in Australia please note that the green slip insurance is for third party personal injury only. If you wish to insure your vehicle against damage to other vehicles in an accident you will need to cover the vehicle for comprehensive or third party property insurance. Please also be aware that cars purchased from a private owner may have an outstanding debt. If this is the case the new owner is at risk of having the vehicle repossessed. Before you purchase a vehicle as a result of a private sale please check the National Roads and Motorists Association website to ensure that the vehicle does not have an outstanding debt.
Arriving in Sydney
An Airport Reception Desk is available to new international students. Before you board the plane remember to check the list of items you can and cannot bring into Austalia under the rules of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service.
