Academic Profile

Dr Thomas Chiu has long combined his part-time teaching role at UTS with his consultancy practice in the business, commerce and government sectors (specializing in China and international trade law issues). He has held honorary Professorships at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing; at Zhengzhou University in Henan; and at the Tianjin Normal University in Tianjin, China.

Dr Chiu has a leadership role in the Australian Chinese community and acted for that community to take legal action against the One Nation Party for racial discrimination and other related issues. Thomas has also been a consultant to the Refugee Review Tribunal.

Since 2000 the Asian Development Bank commissioned him as an International Legal Expert to review and rewrite the insurance and regulatory law of the China Insurance Regulartory Commission as well as the Pension System of Mongolia. From 1998 to 2004 Thomas had served as a member of the Australia-China Council, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
