Academic Profile
Colin Hawes grew up in the UK & gained a B.A. in Chinese Studies from the University of Durham. Subsequently, he lived in China for three years, developing his Chinese language skills further, and then moved to Canada to complete a Ph.D. in Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver.
Dr Hawes began researching Chinese and East Asian law while teaching Chinese language and culture at the University of Alberta, Canada. He subsequently returned to UBC to complete his law degree. He practised law in Vancouver focusing on Asia-related files before joining the UTS Law Faculty in 2005.
Colin is especially interested in the intersection between legal reform and culture: how cultures impact on the way that law is implemented in different societies, and what happens to laws when they are imported into a new cultural context. This interest is reflected in his recent articles on corporate governance and banking with Chinese characteristics, and on Chinese corporate culture.
